About This Resource

The K-12 Public Schools Large Loss Report 2019 summarizes major damage awards and settlements of $250,000 or more that affected public schools in 2017 and 2018.

The cases include a:

  • $36.1 million jury award in a school bus incident
  • $15.7 million settlement in a sex abuse lawsuit
  • $1.1 million award for an athletic injury
  • $1 million jury award in a racial harassment lawsuit

These descriptions are drawn from published accounts, and most do not involve United Educators (UE) members. However, they do reflect trends UE has seen among its claims. Complaints involved abuse, bullying, discrimination, harassment, negligence, sexual abuse and assaults, and wrongful death.

Since the release of this report, some of the outcomes may have changed as a result of subsequent legal proceedings. Regardless of the outcome, the defense expense can be significant.

Institutions and brokers can use this report to assess risk management programs and insurance coverage needs.
