    Preparing for Flu and Other Pandemics

    This winter's flu season arrived early with an aggressive strain of the virus. With many states reporting widespread influenza activity, health officials are concerned that the 2012-2013 flu could become a pandemic. Because students can be a particularly vulnerable population, schools, colleges, and universities should prepare a flexible pandemic plan that encompasses all types of diseases.

    Protecting Against Bacterial Meningitis

    Bacterial meningitis is rare, but when it strikes, it can be lethal. An outbreak at a Southern elementary school caused the deaths of two students; five others were hospitalized. In another incident, a freshman from a UE-member college developed flu-like symptoms and was referred by the campus health center to the emergency room for further evaluation. The student had contracted meningitis and required amputation of one of her legs and two of her fingers.
