As the number of mass-casualty events increase, administrators must be prepared to respond. A comprehensive crisis response plan and a business continuity plan can help reduce risk. Before creating a crisis response plan, institutions should complete a comprehensive risk assessment. An institution’s crisis response plan should be shaped by questions raised in the assessment and be specific to the nature and needs of the institution. Once a comprehensive response plan is in place, it's important to:

  • Hold quarterly and perhaps monthly crisis response team meetings to discuss the plan and individual roles and responsibilities
  • Ensure new employees are aware of the plan
  • Test your plan with a tabletop exercise or a full-scale simulation
