A poorly handled crisis can cause serious damage to an institution’s reputation or financial standing. Learn how you can ensure a “Cool Head, Warm Heart” approach to crises through effective planning at your institution.

The first step in good crisis response is a strong crisis communication plan. Consider including the following elements in your plan:

  • Define a crisis in a way that is broad enough to trigger your crisis communication plan in a variety of scenarios to maximize the plan’s effectiveness.
  • Set objectives for your crisis communication plan to guide how your institution makes decisions during a crisis.
  • Identify the main audiences that you need to reach with your crisis communication plan to ensure no key group is left out during an emergency.
  • Create a multidisciplinary crisis communication team to ensure that key knowledge and expertise is available in a crisis.
