About This Resource

When United Educators (UE) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) convened a summit of independent school administrators to discuss their study abroad programs, many participants cited the need for greater education and training of trip leaders.

Student safety is compromised when those who supervise study abroad trips have not received proper training. This checklist gives K-12 study abroad trip leaders, including employees, volunteers, and chaperones, an overview of risk management considerations. It may be particularly helpful if your school does not have a global studies director or department that oversees these programs. Items include:

  • Formation and approval of the program
  • The use of third-party providers
  • Student selection
  • Pre-trip orientation
  • Oversight during the program
  • Evaluation after the program
